    • Eh... I want to talk about your opinion in the Cancelled Silent Hills, I know this may sound a little controversial but, I think this is all show 'cause Kojima is apparently out of the company for many, many reasons. It was a pretty cool game and a big collab, but something went wrong.

        Loading editor
    • Boy, I'll tell ya, Pauly-kun.  When I heard about that, I was miffed.  It always bothers me (especially in the area of video games) when something is announced that people have been waiting for, and then it gets canceled (or is otherwise disappointing).

But the weird thing is, I'm not even a Silent Hill fan, or a fan of horror games in general.  What really excited me was the level of effort that was going into it.  I mean the demo was scary in a really cool way from what I saw, and the fact that it was a collab between Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, two giants of entertainment...it's such a shame, right?

        Loading editor
    • Me too. I wanted to see more of this great thing, but in these days, many great things don't pass.

        Loading editor
    • Yeah, it's sadly pretty true.  That's the same kind of reason why I hope the new Star Wars Battlefront is good.  People (and more importantly, I...) have been waiting for that series to be rebooted for 10 years now, so if it's not good...ugh, I don't like thinking about it.

        Loading editor
    • Anyway, here's another possible topic: anybody like fighting games?

        Loading editor
    • Eh... Me! It's my favorite genre, quarter of my list is fighting games :3

        Loading editor
    • Ah, cool!  What's your favorite one?

        Loading editor
    • Street Fighter and Guilty Gear, Blazblue comes in third place as well, I'm more of a 2.5D and 2D junkie.

I recall for me that Smash isn't a FG in a sense, Is more like a Brawler for me.

        Loading editor
    • Hmm among my favorite fighting games is Super Smash Bros, Touhou 12.3 and 13.5, Guilty Gear XRD and... that's it, I am not a fan of fighting games but the ones I play are fun, at least for me XD

        Loading editor
    • Fighting games are my favourite type. My favourites in particular are Street Fighter, King of Fighters, Guilty Gear, Tekken and Samurai Shodown IV. There's one fighting game that I've seriously been wanting to play for a long time now and that's Rival Schools.

        Loading editor
    • I have an interesting relationship with fighting games.  I've tried Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat multiple times before, and I understand the appeal, but the only fighter I'm REALLY into is Smash Bros., and I mean I'm REALLY into it.  (Just ask Isaac, I was super messed up when he kept beating me. :P)

The thing about it is, I don't really like the traditional "fighting game" formula, for two reasons: 1) because it's always so enclosed, and, 2) the combos are annoyingly hard to execute.  Call me a filthy casual if you insist, but the things I love about Smash compared to everything else is that players can dodge around each other, and have to recover from offstage, so there's an entirely different dynamic.

And, on top of that, the controls themselves are pretty simple - the hard part is learning how to use them all effectively, which makes it a richer experience in my opinion.

I find traditional fighters fun to watch, though.  Plus, they have really cool characters.  In fact, I used to love drawing MK characters when I was little because they were so colorful.

    • When I was a kid, I really liked the awful PS1 ports of Capcom games (while SFA3 is the best of them imo), since they where the only accessible ones in my zone, and also played Japanese ports even If i didn't knew the language itself. *giggles*

I did have the first smash bros, it was so fun, but I didn't know the hidden characters until much recently, and I now played all the Smash series that I recently played Melee, heck, in my PC only but my PC sucks. Hahaha.

        Loading editor
    • Lulz.  Yeah, I've only played 2 out of 4 Smash games, but my brother-in-law has Melee, and I REALLY want to try it.  It looks crazy fun.

      Who's your favorite Smash character?

        Loading editor
    • The first game Captain Falcon was my favorite, and post Melee, Marth and Sonic post Brawl, Lucina in 4, but I started to play with Ness and Lucas.

        Loading editor
    • I've played the first Smash Bros game on the N64, and back then it was a pretty exciting game to play back then (ahhh the 90's), I always tend to play as Link, though for some reason, I can remember my friends back then had this strange, mysterious dislike of him. I've think I've played the second game only once in my lifetime and that was it. Despite that fact Nintendo's had some good games on them, the console itself just didn't appeal to me like the PlayStations or XBOX's did. And when it comes to fighting games, I do prefer the ones where the gameplay is more complexed and balanced, like in Street Fighter III Third Strike.

        Loading editor
    • What about games from genres that normally wouldn't appeal to you. For example, I'm not fond of shooting games as much, but I would play a whole day of games like Quake, Doom and TimeSplitters.

        Loading editor
    • RPG's, While I don't like the genre too much, the Mother series is an exception, unique, comedic, yet mixing some "adult" themes with kids as protagonists.

        Loading editor
    • Well, first off, my favorite Smash characters are Link, Sonic, Shulk, and Lucina.  Although I also like Mewtwo, Villager, Pit, Zelda, Lucario, and Greninja. (SSB4 is my favorite, if you couldn't tell.)

As for this whole exception to the rule bit, Smash is my exception for "fighting" games.  I'm picky about shooters too - the only one I really like is Star Wars Battlefront.  Just because everything is deliberate, and you have to use strategy more than react to what's in front of you.

        Loading editor
    • So here's a new question to think about: what's your favorite game of all time?  Do you have one?

        Loading editor
    • Sonic 1 for being simplistic yet charming. Followed by many others, I don't have really a favorite game of all-times.

        Loading editor
    • Street Fighter Alpha 2, there's just something about it that sets it apart from the other Street Fighter games in a good way.

        Loading editor
    • Warioware is best easily control move. looks awesome.

        Loading editor
    • My favorite is The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.  I've already given my reasoning at least a few times, but it was the first really deep game I played, I love the aesthetic of it, and something about it always felt purely adventurous and epic to me.  Plus, Midna is awesome.

    • Yesterday I finally managed to obtain Rival Schools for the PlayStation and I gotta say I'm enjoying it. Speaking of which, what is the one video game that you have bought recently?

    • Planning to have Guilty Gear Xrd, I'm short of Wallet because personal reasons, also my bro gifted me a Sonic amiibo.

        Loading editor
    • I hope I can get a Sonic amiibo soon.  There are four amiibos I want in the long term, and I haven't gotten my hands on any of them yet.  I'm looking to get Shulk, Link, Sonic, and Lucina (my four favorites, like I just said earlier.)

It really sucks that there's such a stock crisis going on with the amiibos, doesn't it?

        Loading editor
    • I doubt my country will get past the Wave 1 of Amiibos.

        Loading editor
    • If it doesn't, that'd be a shame.  But then again, at least they won't have to deal with shipments not getting to store shelves.  It gets really annoying really fast.

        Loading editor
    • Guys guys.  I got an amiibo today!  It wasn't a Sonic, although I'm planning to get my hands on one of those as soon as I can; it was a Link amiibo!  The funny story was that I went out today with the intention of getting Sonic, but for some reason, it wasn't at the store I went to, even though I looked it up beforehand.  I didn't want to go home with none of the 4 I wanted, so I went to another GameStop closer to my house, and it turns out they had Link there!

So I brought Link back and named him "Skywalker," because I gave him the Skyloft Link costume.  Plus I'm a rabid Star Wars fan.  I trained him up into the level 30s in one night, and he's already pretty strong.  I'm actually planning to try to get better with certain characters to train him with them properly.

I'll tell ya, I'm having way more fun with amiibos than I thought!  It's so cool to name them and see them get better as you spar with them, not to mention the fact that they double as a cool action figure.  I'm hoping Skywalker will eventually become my high-level training partner in Smash, and that I can get the rest of the ones I'm looking for. :)

In other theme, what game genres don't attract your attention?

        Loading editor
    • Final Fantasy, overall shooter games and some fighting games don't catch my attention a lot, I can't name the games because I don't recall most of them atm, but I can say some of them are among the overrated ones.

        Loading editor
    • Yeah, I generally agree with that assessment, Isaac.  I consistently find myself disappointed by Final Fantasy, which is weird because I think Xenoblade Chronicles is awesome, and they have similar themes.  I never really like games that feel like they have no zest to them.

        Loading editor
    • I don't like FF much too. Xenoblade is an awesome gem too.

The genres that I'm not into too much are fp/3p shooters, strategy and those as such. But I like Music Games and Action Adventure games such as the Dance Dance Revolution and Yakuza series respectively.

        Loading editor
    • I get why people are not very fond of many Final Fantasy games, I personally find 7, X and XIII to be utterly overrated. But if you really want to play an actually good FF RPG, I recommend Final Fantasy IX.

        Loading editor
    • If it meets certain requirements, I could give it a shot to see what the heck is up with these games tbh, because as far as it goes, in general, RPG is asociated with FF (at least in my country).

    • I'm surprised no one has mentioned Pokemon when it comes to RPG, since that is the genre for many of its games. Btw IsGamer13 just out of curiosity, when you mention your country, which country do you live in?

    • Uh... I can say I am latin, that's what I can say for now.

      Oh, I'm a latino tho.

I like Pokemon games too, albeit I'm more attached to the older ones, but ORAS is pretty good too.

    • My first pokemon game was Platinum, I was a Battle Frontier addict, I won't lie lol, I trained pokemons just for it XD. B/W and B2/W2 were good as well (specially the latter), X and Y are fine, but the post-game things come short compared to the previous gens (even ORAS has more, and not by a lot).

        Loading editor
    • My first was Pokemon Blue all the way back when it got released in 1999, but I have to say I like Silver, SoulSilver and B/W 2 the most though. I'm thinking of eventually getting X or Y and OR or AS, but my mind is on other things at the moment.

        Loading editor
    • You should get OR/AS, it's a very detailed remake with a fair story and a lot of features (compared to X/Y), I'd recommend it over X/Y just because it has more durability gameplay-wise.

        Loading editor
    • It kinda depends.  If you're in it for postgame, I guess ORAS is better, but XY has its own advantages.

    • Here's a question: what do you guys think of DLC in games now?  Do you think it's generally worth it, or do you think it's a scam?

        Loading editor
    • When it comes to DLC, my opinion of it is very negative, it's something that shouldn't exist IMO. To me its like something you can't have unless you're willing to expose yourself, sell your soul and pay more than the newly released game you bought costed. Capcom, especially Yoshinori Ono in particular, are guilty of this and are the reason behind why I don't think highly of DLC. When I saw what their idea for DLC was for Street Fighter x Tekken, I literally went berserk, and I sure as hell wasn't the only one. They actually promised us some badass characters like Guy, Sakura and Lars to be in the game's roster fully, then later they announce them as DL freakin C??!! DLC is something that just doesn't make the game you're playing look like a full game and that annoys me to no end.

        Loading editor
    • DLC is neither bad or good, I particularly enjoy Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8's DLC, and also RDR is pretty good for me too. And also is an optional thing.

However, some of them were pretty rushed, like Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and SFXTK are few of the worst offenders, as they were in the disc. (Even if I have the 25th anniversary box of SF.)

        Loading editor
    • On-disc DLC makes me furious, because it's so clear that they could have just included it in the first place.  If they're going to have it on there, the base game has to be less than full price, or else it's a scam.

However, some DLC is good in my opinion.  Like Pauly-kun said, Smash 4 has cool DLC, and there's more on the way.  It's very reasonably priced, and it makes sense because Smash 4 is a full game in itself, but they're giving people the opportunity to expand it if they really want to.  Plus, Sakurai and friends did bust their asses to get us the game by 2014, so I give them credit.

Hyrule Warriors DLC is pretty cool - all of it can be bought for 20 bucks, which is a third of the sale price, but it adds so much that I think it's worth it.  What I really object to is companies charging money for asanine stuff like singular palette swaps or levels with no longevity.  Heck, DLC that comes out as soon as the game does is annoying too.  It has to be a reasonable add-on that contributes to a product complete in its own right.  Otherwise it usually turns out to be pickpocketing consumers.

        Loading editor
    • Well, I can't say DLC is bad, because some games (like most people already stated) have very good DLC that you should look forward to purchase, but in general, most of the DLC i have seen is pretty petty, stupid or just screams scam in your face, I usually don't bother with these to be honest.

As far as DLC goes, I never purchased DLC, mainly because my country is not really approved for most content, so I might not be able to buy DLC for sm4sh (the only game i am willing to purchase DLC from).

        Loading editor
    • That's kind of a shame.  But yeah, I agree with that view of things.  Personally, I try not to even buy games that peddle stupid DLC.

        Loading editor
    • On a similar note, I wanna ask you guys about something you may or may not have direct experience with, but that really annoys me: final boss battles that get turned into quick-time button-press events.  Anybody else think those are stupid?

    • Ugh, these are horrible for me... I have really bad experiences with them.

        Loading editor
    • I'm split 50/50 on it. In some cases you dpn't have a problem with it and can do all of it without effort, while in others it can get irritating.

You're lucky, because you must pay 8 bucks for her and other 8 for Mr. Lion (I call Leo Whitefang like that, hue.)

And the typical 1.5 year update like Blazblue, hahaha. (It is possible, but I'm sorta Paranoic with that.)

    • I'm hoping the Arc System Works does a updated version of GGXRD for us to play, I haven't played it and I'm sure the game looks great but I don't thats all there is to it. If they do an update version, hopefully not only can we freely play as Elphelt and Leo, but maybe we can have characters that deserve to be in like Jam Kuradoberi, Anji Mito, Johnny and Testament to the game too, I'd love to see them in XRD sprites.

XRD doesn't feel right without Jam especially.

        Loading editor
    • The 8 buck thing sounds like one of those examples of overpriced DLC to me.  Funny coincidence.

Anyway, Shadow of Mordor was actually the motivation for this question.  All that fighting, training, upgrading, and EPIC buildup...only to end it with a quick-time event.  I was SO...just...annoyed.  An amazing game like that deserved better than that.  I don't even think it would have been hard to make it an actual fight.  A straight-up slugfest would've worked for me.  It worked in Twilight Princess...why not this game, where the combat is super intense?

But I think quick-time events in general are dumb, because not only do they take you out of the game, they pose a ridiculous kind of challenge.  You don't prove your skill at the game, you prove your skill at pushing buttons at specific moments.

    • When it comes to fighting games it's usually good to wait a few months before picking it up (unless you want to be part of the group that's in the game from day/week one). Most fighting games these days come out with updated edition. The only popular fighting game series that don't come out with updated editions seem to be Namco with Soul Calibur and Tekken series.

Quick Time events depends on the game for me. Some games I don't think they are necessary, but others i think they add to it (when not used excessively). The Resident Evil series went a little overboard with it after 4. Generally I like a quick time event if the action going on the screen could it be replicated in a way to guide the player to that type of action.

An interesting and cool take on a quick time final boss battle that i'd like to emulate (i.e steal and never turn back) would be from Asura's Wrath. Coming to the end of the battle you begin to see the quick time events for the boss alongside yours. The better you do at your quick times begins to unnerve the boss and the boss starts to lose at his quick times. But the way its done, from what I remember, is that you don't realize it is the boss's quicktime events in the beginning so it starts to unnerve you when you think you missed your button presses.

        Loading editor
    • That's kinda cool, but I still think QTEs break immersion by their very design.  The only way they don't is if there's no cue on the screen, and your instinct in a certain situation is to just hit a particular button over and over.

        Loading editor
    • Portal 2 has fabulous "quick-time events." In a few instances, you are having your situation narrated, and there are surfaces you can apply portals to. If you do so, you survive. More importantly, if you shoot the same portal near your postion as far away, the game picks up on this and swaps them so you stay immersed.

Interaction including quick time events are hit-and-miss in the 2nd newest tomb raider. (I'm not known to buy releases on time). Sometimes, they're ok, but failed events massacre the immersion. When you do something on faith and everything slows down so you can get the button correctly - good. That stupid shrinking circle where you press the button or get a cutscene death - bad. I have died every time there is the threat of death.

        Loading editor
    • OH AND THE QTE's IN FORCE UNLEASHED TO KILL BOSSES SUUUUUCK! Get a massive chained sequence correct or you have to restart it. What's more, all of your actions are like killing blows. E.g. Smash the opponent into a cliff wall, electrocute them, fling a giant rock to crush them against the cliff wall, throw your lightsaber to cut off their legs, miss the timing when you jump above them and propell them into the ground. You have to restart everything and their legs are reattached.

        Loading editor
    • Yeah, that's the kind of QTE that really blows.  It's like the game is saying "these are the rules you have to follow - deal with it."  That's the same complaint I had starting out about boss QTEs.  The problem is that throughout a game, you become accustomed to all the ways of doing things, such as the ins and outs of fighting.  An important moment that gets turned into a QTE, or a constant stream of QTEs, both devalue the effort you put into learning the complexities of the game.

That's what bothered me so much about the final boss in Shadow of Mordor - there was so much method and strategy to the fighting in that game, but the climactic moment dismisses all of that for the sake of cinematics.

But that's not to say they can't be well-executed.  I just think that usually, there's a better way of doing things.

Same thing applies. BTW Extra Credits is worth binge watching

    • Those points were actually really well-made.  Long, drawn-out cutscenes do have a way of dragging out the experience when they simply feed you a story rather than serve to enrich the world.  It has to play into the interactivity of the world in order to be interesting.

I actually just watched an interesting Game Theorists video about why video games translate so badly into movies.  The latter part makes points that remind me of the reasoning in the Extra Credits video.

    • To be honest, I didn't actually hate the Silent Hill film. I was annoyed that it wasn't Harry Mason looking for his Cheryl, but overall it really wasn't as bad as the ratings make it out to be. I'm surprised every Resident Evil films with Mila Jovovich in didn't get mentioned because those films to me really do suck.

        Loading editor
    • I agree, Splatoon is quite a different shooter, almost very unique in it's concept and execution, it's one of the very few shooters where "getting kills" or "killing everything" is not the core of the game, yet defeating your enemies with paint is a great help.

I would get it myself, but it's kind of hard to be honest.

    • The bright colors are cool too.  It's just an overall itneresting idea.

    • Yea. Shooters aren't my favorite games although i've come to enjoy them more these days. When I was learning to play shooters the people teaching me were already pros in their games, like Halo and Call of Duty, so I became easy points for all of them. Turned me off of most shooters there.

I only started giving shooters a chance when I started playing Co-op in Borderlands 2. I think I prefer co-op or large team vs large team when it comes to shooters. Borderlands and the online play for Killzone are the only shooters that's made me obsessively play them.

      -Mine's Sonic, I don't tell why because it's obvious!-

    • First off, as far as shooters are concerned, I enjoy playing the TimeSplitters games, Quake 1 & 2 and Final Doom. For the worst game fandom ever, either Halo fans or Call of Duty fans annoy me to no end.

        Loading editor
    • I feel like all of the above are the most annoying fandoms.  It kinda disappoints me how bad the Sonic fandom is, because I think the Sonic universe is cool.  Its fans are just either too weird or too contentious.  I try not to go too far in either of those directions.

I dunno, I think any fanbase that consists of weirdos or rabid apologists is a bad fanbase.

The in-fighting between Casual and Competitive players in fighting games gets bad. IMO that's the worse one.

      Yes, is beary bad enough.

For the Fighting games things, it gets horribly horrible, especially if you're talking about Smash Bros. It releases a complete sh*tstorm, especially the Melee vs. all other games fans.

        Loading editor
    • Ugh, don't even get me started on those things, I find it so idiotic that people still think Melee is the bible of Smash or some shit when it's already like 14-15 years old.

What's more surprising is that there is still a big melee community, otherwise that game would already had been put to rest to give the newer games more chance (Brawl was already an "unjoyable blasphemy" and I hope it doesn't happen with sm4sh, but I doubt it).

    • Woah ok clearly i don't come hear often.

      1. Don't play CoD or Halo to get into shooters. Honestly. That's like playing professional Ultimate Frisbee to see if you like playing catch. You picked the games with massive fanbases who spend 2000+ hours to kill you with one hit from anywhere on the map, so see if you like the faster paced nature of first person games. Why would you hurt me like this. Play something like TF2, or COD with friends vs bots, or ....don't ever play Halo if you're just starting out.

      2. You guys didn't define how a "bad" fandom is measured. Disturbing? Sonic. Immature? CoD. Wrathful? Dota.

      3. Smash 4 is a nearly acceptible alternative to Melee. Brawl, unless you mean Project M, will forever be a curse word to a Melee fanboy. Play Project M.

      4. 90% of everything is crap. Always worth bringing up.

Heh. Isn't that Sturgeon's Law? And yea out of the fighting games Smash Brothers has it the worse. Other fighting game fandoms refuse to see it as a fighting game. At best you'll get it called a mascot fighter (which I'll agree with the term) but even that is treated like a derogatory title. It's Smash Brothers against the world.

And then when you get to Smash Brother's fandom it gets even sadder. You'd think they'd be bound together, but then you have the competitive players who kind of kill the game. I don't know if you all ever saw a meele tournament, but i went to watch one and from what i saw they only play on one stage (it's the stage that's just one single platform) with no items on. I'm not one to tell people how to play a game but i feel this is just misuse of smash brothers. Maybe it's just me.

Weirdly PSASBR doesn't seem to get any flack. Or at least one that I heard of.

    • I consider the SSB series as a brawler in my eyes. Given my history in FG since childhood, I'm neutral in the tourney and casual thingy I play them for fun. Albeit I'm a single player girl.

Even the producer and creator kinda dislikes the tournament scene of the series... Jeez.

(In other shooter themes, Team Fortress 2 is a great game and has a fun SFM community which I like a lot and makes me laugh a lot.)

        Loading editor
    • I think I've said before that SSB is like the highest form of the 2D fighter to me.  I generally don't like 2D fighters because there's no feedback from the environment, but in Smash, the environment is half the game, which makes it a much deeper experience.

And boy, I'll tell ya.  People who debate which Smash installment is the best are a disappointment to me.  All of them are different and cool in their own way, everybody just likes some better than others.  That kind of tribal mentality about which one is "best" is stupid to me.

Also, I want to mention that Isaac (IsGamer13) has retired his one and only labor of love, Dimensional Administrator: The Locked Dimension.  It was an unbelievable effort that I've been seeing get bigger and bigger, and now, he's decided to delete it entirely.

So, I'd just like to take the opportunity to simply congratulate him for creating something extraordinary, and in my view, monumental to the history of this site.  Excellent work, Isaac!

Yea. I agree with the producer. I've been into fighting games for a long time and have been on both sides of the tournament and casual play so I understand some of the mentality, but I think their serious about it in the wrong way.

I agree with you E. Knight. I don't mind friendly debate over different installments of a series but some take it too far. It happens a little bit in street fighter fandoms too. Usually 3rd Strike is seen as the best of the series and the others are for 'casuals'.

The Metal Gear series generally blows my mind. From the awesome battles against Psycho Mantis and The End to characters like Sniper Wolf, to the themes one memes and deconstruction of being a espionage hero. Asura's Wrath also blew my mind due to how the series escalated in power levels. One boss transforms into a being larger then the earth to use a finger poke of doom on your character to kill him. This is barely halfway into the game and not even in the top 5 of amazing things in the game.

The only good things that actually came out of E3 was the new South Park game and the promise of Shenmue III.

    • I'm actually really happy that Shenmue is getting a new installment!  I've always been of the opinion that Sega should give more love to its older franchises.  Now if they make sequels to Space Channel 5 and Jet Set Radio, I'll be really gratified.

I'm kind of surprised at all the backlash Federation Force has received, but I entirely agree that it should've been its own IP.  That was a monumental fail by Nintendo.  But otherwise, I think they did well.  Yoshi's Woolly World looks fun and aesthetically interesting, and Star Fox Zero looks like it will kick an appropriate level of ass (I'm TOTALLY getting it).  I'm also looking forward to Fire Emblem FatesMario Tennis Ultra Smash, and Xenoblade Chronicles X.  Plus, I like the idea of getting a K.K. • The best games for me this E3 were The Last Guardian, Shenmue 3, Star Ocean and Horizon. I'm a big fan of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus so it's good to see the game isn't in permanent devlopment hell. Horizon looks like it'll be good with the Dinobot theme going on although I worry it'll be a little too much like Tomb Raider. I hope it doesn't turn out as 'Lara Croft fighting dinosaurs'.

The problem, Clarent, with Final Fantasy is the three most mainstream popular ones are: FF7, FFX, and FF13. Those three tend to get the most favoritism for different reasons. My experience with some mainstream gamers (i think) is that they want an FF7 or FF6 remake. Those two seem to be considered the best of series. I'm not even sure if a FF7 remake would ever live up to the expectations and high bar that fans want from it (although their best bet is probably using the ps4 system for it. They were correct in holding off from doing one till now.).

From fighting games, I don't remember his name, but there is a boss from Samurai Showdown that basically everytime he hit you with his sword it was like 1/4 of your life was depleted. He also had an attack that hit on the ground most of the screen that did about the same damage too. Mildred from Arcana Heart and Night Terror from Soul Calibur III. Mildred's first form is unfair and Night Terror is just insane.

From other games there are the Pupa and it's alternate forms from Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker. The Armored Core series gave me a few bosses I'll never forget due to difficulty. Unfettered, Genobee, Exile, Sforatzo... but Nine Ball Seraph takes the whole bloody cake. In a game where the mecha are for the most part grounded, Seraph flies around, shoots missles and beams, and cuts you up like it came from the Gundam or Code Geass universe.

    • I actually think overly-hard boss battles are one of the banes of game design.  And I don't mean challenge is the bad thin; I mean that bosses that are so hard that even beating them doesn't feel satisfying are a bad thing.  Boss battles are hard to do well, I find.

        Loading editor
    • Who is the boss in Samurai Showdown 6? That boss in that game is the one that gave me a lot of trouble.

In all of the 2D Mortal Kombat games the first characters I beat the game with were Noob Saibot, Rain, Scorpion and Sub Zero. Basically the ones you could spam their special moves against the bosses. Kintaro was such a beast too.

It takes a lot of skill to make a difficult but fun boss. Overall I found most bosses I've fought to be satisfying when I beat them. Mildred, Dural and some of the extra missions in Guilty Gear Accent Core where you fight the Gold version of characters weren't satisfying for me (after beating Mildred once I was turned off of Arcana Heart or a while).

What boss battles didn't satisfy you E Knight? Also why do you think that is? Was it due to difficulty or other aspects of it? One reason I never find beating Dural satisfying is due to its arid character design and place in the story.

        Loading editor
    • The final boss of Samurai Shodown 6 is a demon version of Gaoh. To describe how much I hate him, I'll leave this here.

What of bosses or final bosses you enjoyed fighting against? It was really fun and satisfying battling the Nyx Avatar in Persona 3, and the music playing was just awesome to hear (The Battle for Everyone's Souls). Then there's Nemesis final form in Resident Evil 3 that was really intense and you felt a real accomplishment after beating him. Street Fighter III's Gill is a fantastic boss to fight against, and then Nobunaga in Onimusha 3 was also and intensive, enjoyable fight too.

        Loading editor
    • Well, I don't actually have anything particular in mind, but I know I've seen boss battles (or more generally, hard parts in a game) that are so difficult and time-consuming that getting through them stops feeling rewarding and just feels like a relief to be done with.  I feel like if it goes that far, then the player's time is being wasted.

Don't get me wrong, if a boss battle is hard and takes a few tries to beat, that's fine.  If it gets to the point where it takes upward of, say, ten tries... then I feel like something is wrong.  Basically, I feel like a boss battle should involve a balance of challenge and learning.  An ideal boss battle is one where you learn something with each attempt, and become better and better equipped to deal with the challenge.  But, if the challenge is so serious that learning all the details of it barely matters, I feel it's probably too hard.

It seems like a good example is the Shao Kahn boss battle, because he flings projectile after projectile at you and repeatedly cuts off your rhythm, so you can't help but have a hard time.

        Loading editor
    • Heh. Nice list Clarent. Yea i'm pretty sure it's Gaoh who I'm talking about. I didn't play Samurai Showdown long enough to beat him, but he ran through me and the 10 characters i tried with. And Nyx from Persona 3 is also one of my favorite boss battles of all time. The music, the setting, Nyx with his evil monolgue every few turns. It's one of the best boss battles I've had. I'm still playing Persona 4 (no spoilers!) but I'm hoping it's just as good.

True E Knight. I think a boss battle should be able to subtly teach you and push you better at the game and not just find a game exploit to beat it. If the game has different difficulties then Normal dificulty should be the teaching untensil where you subtly learn the game while enjoying the story. The harder difficulties can serve for frustrating and time consuming where you need to be perfect or learn how to exploit the game. That and scret bosses. Granted i say this knowing well when i create game ideas I think of some unfair bosses. Some of these games must have conditioned me for abuse.

    • I couldn't believe it when I heard that Iwata-san died.  I had no idea he was even having health problems.  I can't help but feel that the gaming industry won't ever be the same.  So many great things came from his time as CEO - heck, he's been in charge of the company for as long as I could remember.  He oversaw a lot of what made me love Nintendo, and I really going to miss him.

I hope the company is able to recover from this without too much trouble.

    • I know right, I got so upset hearing such a wonderful person passed away, I had no idea he had health problems either, and he died at a fairly young age too (55 I heard), surprising, considering how healthy and long-living japanese people are (according to common belief).

        Loading editor
    • I know, he was only as old as my parents, and I never knew he had a bout with cancer.  It was as though one day I'm thinking he's alive and well as president of Nintendo, and then suddenly I hear he's dead.  It's not just sad, it's...kind of strange.

It's good to see Guilty Gear at EVO. Is this the first time in a while that Guilty Gear has been at EVO? I don't remember hearing or seeing it in recent years. I have to check EVO. I'm interested to see how Dead or Alive and Mortal Kombat X did this year.

    • Wow.  It may be a slightly outdated phrase, but I believe "FAIL" is the only thing you can say about that match.

Plus, I'm not surprised ZeRo won, the kid's a beast.  I don't know how he does it.  I figured it would come down to ZeRo v. Mr. R, but I didn't think ZeRo would take home a 3 - 0 win.  With two players like that, I figured it'd be down to the wire, but ZeRo's operating on a level of his own.

I am kind of disappointed that he won with Diddy Kong, though.  I know it's his main, and I'd never hold anyone's mains against them, but I'm just sick of seeing Diddy Kong (since I don't really like the character in general).  What would've made it amazing for me is if ZeRo had won EVO with Shulk, because I know he likes Shulk a lot, and he and I agree on the point that Shulk is a character with huge undiscovered potential.  But whatever, I still feel very happy for him. :)

    • By the way, I also figured I'd mention that I've started playing Splatoon, and boy, what people say about that game is true.  It's been a while since I've immediately loved a game the way I immediately loved Splatoon.

Somehow the designers of Splatoon achieved this rhythm and style of gameplay that makes every player feel like part of a team, makes them able to contribute even without incredible gear, and makes them want to keep playing even if they lose.  That's impressive IMO.

        Loading editor
    • I heard Mixed opinions about the Splatfests, but otherwise, good opinions I heard of that.

        Loading editor
    • It's a good game.  My only complaint might be that you're often paired up with random people every match, so that leads to a lack of teamwork and often creates a losing team.  Although, the average player will still probably win about half the time in Splatoon no matter what his team is like.

        Loading editor
    • I like the concept of how it even rewards pacifists. All players can contribute in a massively useful way. Teamwork that doesn't necessarily require communication.

        Loading editor
    • Yeah, me too!  People have complained that there's no voice chat in online matches, but I actually like that about it, because voice chat is unnecessary.  A team of four competent players knows what has to be done at any given time.  Everybody's there to have fun and do their best, and getting kills isn't super-important the way it is in other shooters.

    • I thought I might show this trailer of a debuting character in Street Fighter V

What do you guys think about him? I personally think he's badass. Also they stated that they will have 16 characters in the roster, 3 of them being new characters along with Necalli. So far 8 characters have confirmed, but I hope that Alex, Urien and Juri make the cut along with Karin and R.Mika, even though I seriously want Guy and Cody in the game.

    • I have an interesting question for everybody: what's your favorite weapon in any game?

        Loading editor
    • I'd go with giant swords mainly because of the power in them. But anything that can cleave open an obese giant in two is fine by me. >:3

        Loading editor
    • It may or not be predictable at this point, but my favorite sword in games is by far the Monado, Shulk's sword from Xenoblade.  I mean, just freakin' look at it:

      Monado

It's like a cross between Buster Sword and lightsaber, not to mention its sleek, sci-fi fantasy design.  I swear, sometimes I think this sword is what keeps me coming back to this game.

    • It probably doesn't count as one weapon, but biomass in the Prototype series. Slice, dice, bodyslam, impale, implode or consume anything and everything. In the opening cutscene of Prototype 2, it's shown biomass beats knives. Favorite based on reliability, usefulness, versatility and enjoyability.

She's one of my favorite fighting schoolgirls. That and seeing her in these 2.5D graphics with an updated movelist would be awesome.

    • Seeing how she fights in the trailer compared to how she fights in Street Fighter Alpha 3, they've made a really good job in bringing more of her elegance out in her fighting style in SFV, especially since she's one of the few characters in the series that uses real-life martial arts techniques.

    • A question. What kinds of games you dislike?

I dislike, online and moba games and any online games, and war fps too.

        Loading editor
    • me, i hate racing games and the entire Metal Gear series.

    • There's one particular videogame I really hate more than Halo and Call of Duty, in fact it should be considered the worst ever videogame of all time and it's called City of Lost Children. You basically play as this girl and you're trying to solve this mystery while hiding from a group of kidnappers. But what made me want to destroy the game so badly was that everywhere you click on what looked like a vital clue because you were completely and utterly stuck, all you hear was the girl going: "I can't manage it." and "I can't do anything." over and over and over again that you would pull out your hair anguish it was that bad. I really, REALLY hate City of Lost Children, because it made other awful games like Simpson's Skateboarding look awesome in compare.

    • As a general rule, I dislike hackneyed or poorly-made games.  The endless stream of FPS games is getting very old, but I enjoy Splatoon VERY much because it's not only a stylistically different shooter, but the whole ink mechanic makes you think about space differently, and I have mad respect for that.

MOBA's seem to be a dime a dozen these days as well, and I'm not even interested in what can be considered the "greats" of the genre.  They just seem so distant and boring.  MMOs are a similar situation, because they have way too big of a learning curve.  Not to say online games are bad, but they're generally not my thing.

    • Street Fighter V - Character Official Launch Trailer04:45

Street Fighter V - Character Official Launch Trailer

We have our final 16 plus 5 more for early DLC. I tend to have an abusive relationship with Capcom. So with everything after Super Street Fighter IV I take it with a grain of salt. Street Fighter V is looking good and it seems like they are trying to make a change with things... at least initially.

Blanka and Akuma unfortunately didn't make it for me. But getting Charlie and Karin back is great. Add newcomer Laura and my old flame Juri, and I guess I'll survive this time around. Hopefully this won't be a bust.

What does everyone think of the new characters? How do they compare to the new characters from SF4? Better or worse? I think the new guys and gals this time around are collectively cooler overall. Individually I don't think any of them are going to be as popular as Juri. Still F.A.N.G is just awesomely funny to me and Rishid is interesting. I think the breakout character is either going to be Laura or Necalli this time around.

Ohh and it seems that the reason Akuma isn't around for Street Fighter V is because he has to repay a debt for a Mishima. That or he got pissed he wasn't in the inital DLC and went for a better deal in his contract. True story:

    • Personally, I think some of the 6 first batch character DLC (Alex, Urien, Ibuki and Juri) should've been in the initial roster and I'd have wanted Zangief and Dhalsim not included at all. On the other hand, I'm ecstatic about Karin and R. Mika being back.

As for the new characters debuting SFV, I think Necalli most of all left a bigger impression than the others (of course, since he appears to be the major character for SFV). Rashid was pretty well done too and I like how he has the wind theme going with him. Laura for me is the least interesting of the four new characters, when I look at her I think she's SFV's new C. Viper, with that weird hairstyle and how she can electrocute you, personally it just seems to put me off in taking an interest to her. F.A.N.G. I have to say looks like a really impressive character and I look the way he battles you, but the only thing I think Capcom need to seriously change for him is that godawful 'Flappy Bird Critical Art', it just looked really REALLY weak for an attack. I believe F.A.N.G. needs a new, BETTER Critical Art than what we saw in the trailer.

Do I think that the new characters in SFV look way better than the ones in SFIV? Absolutely! I even think Laura has a better character design than some of the abominations that debuted in IV ("cough...cough...Rufus...cough...cough...El Fuerte...cough...C. Viper...cough...cough...Decapre").

Forgotten Waterfall and Kanzuki Estate stages look freakin awesome!

    • Akuma's arrival in Tekken 7 WILL be the seeds for Tekken x Street Fighter. BELIEVE

        Loading editor
    • Most definately SecondOp. I feel Tekken x Street Fighter will come out within the next three years. We may even get an announcement for it at the end of this year hopefully.

Those two stages look really good Clarent. I also like F.A.N.G's stage. The statues and the characters fighting in the background remind of the bridge stage from Mortal Kombat II. The Story costumes also came out recently I think. Zangief is finally wearing some clothes. It also looks like he's teamed up with R.Mika. I'm hoping the story turns out be great in this game. The last few years of Street Fighter have been lacking greatly in that department.

Also not sure if this has been on anyone's list of things (they've been announced for a while so you all probably know), but Final Fantasy VII is finally getting a remake and Pokemon Go is looking like we'll finally get the closest thing to real pokemon adventures. I'm not a big fan of FF7, but I can't deny the game is basically the poster boy/pinup girl for Jrpgs. It is looking pretty nice too.

This Pokemon Go is just looking awesome though. Hopefully when it comes out it'll be just like this, free without much pay-to-play stuff, and doesn't take like 90% of your cellphone room.

    • No Scalebound makes me sad T_T...

I'm glad to see Megaman X join the battle for Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. It's about time although I had a feeling X or Trigger would have made it in this game. I'm more hyped seeing Captain Marvel in. Hopefully Felicia, a new Darkstalkers character and Gene from Godhand will make it in. I think we'll get a different Darkstalkers character this time (Felicia and/or Lei Lei will probably get axed for a new or old favorite). Gene is a stretch.

What game(s) is everyone looking forward to in 2017? Horizon: Zero Dawn, Gravity Rush 2 and Persona 5 are the titles I'm keeping an eye on.

        Loading editor
    • I keeping an eye on Yakuza )! THat would be fun to play as Majima and Kiryu!

        Loading editor
    • And what about guest characters for each side, at least just two each from related property, like Jojo for Capcom and Star Wars for Marvel.

        Loading editor
    • Maelstro: I've never played a Yakuza game but this new one is looking pretty nice. The combat looks awesome in it.

Loconator: That would be awesome if they brought in characters from Star Wars and Jojo. They could go in as DLC or secret. I'd like to pit Jojo against Ryu. Heh I could imagine everyone just losing it at gaming expo if Darth Vader or Yoda became a playable character in it.

Also Absolver is looking interesting too. It looks like an MMO that's focused on martial arts and plays more like an action rpg.

This is what the game looks like. Supposedly you can make up your own combos links from moves that you learn. People can also double team others in battle. I'm curious if that possibility will unbalance the gameplay or not. Either way I think the game idea in general is pretty cool.

Ohh and has anyone bought / tried out any of the new VR technology? I've heard people say it really sucks you in. But it's pricey. That and... Johnny Quest, .Hack and Sword Art Online have given me unreasonable high standards for virtual reality.

    • I just got Tekken 7: Fated Retribution on Friday for my PS4, I've been playing the hell out of it on my Hori fight stick.

I, of course, started out with Akuma (as you might've guessed) on Arcade Mode, and man, for a guy predicated on being so OP, he really is lacking in combos or at least they're super hard to pull off. I remember having to use MANY continues to beat Kazumi (the end boss). Then I started playing Treasure Battle with Nina Williams (the poster woman of the Tekken series), and damn, she's OP as hell in this game, I instantly mastered her combos without even practicing. Her combos and move set are off the fucking charts. I went from getting my ass kicked with Akuma to instantly taking names with Nina.
