Dead or Alive VI is the next sequel to the Dead or Alive fighting game series after Dead or Alive 5: Last Round that is developed by Team Ninja and published by Koei Tecmo. It is available for the PlayStation 4 and XBOX One consoles, the PlayStation Vita handheld and the PC. Overall, it is the 19th video game made in the fighting game's franchise.
The story behind Dead or Alive VI will feature the conclusion of the leading characters feud with the antagonist leader of MIST, Victor Donovan. However, unlike the previous games, the plot behind Dead or Alive VI will contain a much darker and more shocking side to the plot of the series. The character roster for Dead or Alive VI will feature a roster of 30 playable fighters to choose from, not including the final boss of Dead or Alive VI who is unplayable.
Among the 30 playable characters, 4 of them make their debut as 'Guest' characters hailing from the Tekken series (Asuka Kazama, Lili, Yoshimitsu and King), much to the surprise and shock of many Dead or Alive fans due to the fact that the game franchise has long been considered as a major rival to the Dead or Alive series for many years.
Prologue
There exists an ancient story almost forever lost, it recounts an event that occurred eons and eons ago.
Once there was a sinister being of chaos. It lead an army around the world with one purpose in mind: to destroy all of humanity. However, the sinister being's conquest was cut short when its servant suddenly turned on its master. The sinister being's servant succeeded in defeating its master, thus saving humanity from utter annihilation. It is said that the servant felt compassion for humanity, and thus decided to protect humanity from the armies of the sinister being, even if it lasted for all eternity.
It has been one year after the events surrounding the Fifth Dead or Alive Tournament. The mysterious and enigmatic leader of the secret organization MIST, Victor Donovan, is just one corner away from completing his Project Alpha plan and create the ultimate weapon. The Mugen Tenshin ninja clan were preparing for their final showdown against Donovan for the crimes he's committed against them, but MIST made the first move by attacking them unexpectedly, everyone in the village was killed except for Ayane, though the leader of the clan, Hayate, was nowhere to be seen in the aftermath. Soon after the incident, the CEO of DOATEC, Helena Douglas, announces the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament to the world.
Fate is beginning to come full circle, the final showdown with Victor Donovan has begun.
Game Menus
Here is the list of game menus to choose from when you are playing Dead or Alive VI.
SCENARIO MODE - A mode where you traverse through the story of Dead or Alive VI.
ARCADE BATTLE MODE - A mode where you choose a character and fight a series of CPU opponents before facing the sub-boss and final boss of the game.
VERSUS MODE - Where you can freely fight the CPU opponents or against another player. You can choose whether you wish to fight in a single battle or a tag battle. You can also save replays of your matches in Versus mode and view in the Theater section in Gallery Mode.
TAG BATTLE MODE - An Arcade-style mode where you choose two character and fight a series of tag team CPU opponents.
SURVIVAL BATTLE MODE - In Survival Battle mode, there are three options to choose from. Normal Survival Battle lets you take on a endless gauntlet of opponents in a one-on-one fight until all of your health bar is completely reduced. Second, making a return from Dead or Alive 2 Ultimate is the Danger Zone Survival, fought only in the Danger Zone arena stage, you must defeat your opponents one by one until your health bar is completely. Meanwhile, when you hit your opponent on the walls, a barrage of items fly out of them, obtain them and they will be available to view in Gallery mode, but be careful though because the opponent can also do the same to you and you will lose those items that upgrade your chances of survival in this gauntlet. The last one is Survival Tag Battle, which you use two playable characters and use them to fight an endless gauntlet of tag team opponents until only one of their health bars is completely reduced.
TRAINING - Here, you can practice with your chosen character as well as being able to go through a trial of performing all the techniques in their moveset.
GALLERY - The Gallery mode in Dead or Alive VI lets you see the media content available in the game.
- Artwork - Lets you see the CG Artwork of the playable characters of Dead or Alive VI and the posters (promotional and non-promotional) for the game. There is also the option where you can choose one of the 30 playable characters in full body view, and view them with any costume you have unlocked for them as well as having them do certain animations. This also gives you the option to use the camera view/picture take mechanism.
- Items - Here you can view the playable characters specific items that are obtained when you play the Danger Zone version of Survival Battle mode.
- Cutscenes - Where you can watch the movie cutscenes of Dead or Alive VI as well as viewing the character victory/lose poses and Fighting Exhibition videos. For all the female characters, you can view their Private Paradise videos in the Cutscenes area. For the Character Win/lose poses, Fighting Exhibitions and Private Paradise videos, you have the option to use the camera view/picture take mechanism.
- Soundtrack - Here, you can listen to the soundtrack of Dead or Alive VI. (See Soundtrack section below)
- Movie Theater - Here, you can view all your saved replays of the matches you played in. Here you also have the option to use the camera view/picture take mechanism.
ALBUM - A mode where you can view all the pictures you have taken with the camera mechanic.
OPTIONS - Where you can change the settings of Dead or Alive VI, as well as being able to load or save your progress.
Gameplay
As with the previous installments of the Dead or Alive series, the fighting system to Dead or Alive VI has is based on the Triangle System which is like a Rock-Paper-Scissors format. In the system, there are three methods of attack: Strike, Throw and Hold, Strike is where you use your chosen character to attack with punches and kick and also has the most buttons to use from whilst Throw and Hold only require one. Strike is superior to Throw and inferior to Hold. Throw is your grappling attacks and is superior to Hold, while inferior to Strike. Hold is your counter-attack function where you stop and opponents Strike but not their Throw. All playable characters are able to perform combos using a variety of commands while performing Strikes, Throws and Holds. They are also capable of side-stepping and perform special moves with a combinations of buttons pressed and the D-pad. Critical Bursts and Critical Stuns also make a return.
Debuting from Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate and making a return again in Dead or Alive VI, the Power Launcher attack mechanic, which enables you to launch your opponent in the air, has been improved on slightly. The moment your character's Power Launcher connects to your opponents, the gameplay slows down, giving you the opportunity to perform a sequence of specific, unique combos your character possesses made for such an occurrence before the opponent hits the ground.
While you are fighting against an opponent, you will have the opportunity to use the environment of the stage the battle is set in to your advantage. There are various specific areas in a stage called Danger Zones that are capable of damaging either you or your opponent during the midst of an attack. In some occasions you can you can get damaged or damage your opponent even further in a sequence moment called a Cliffhanger, quite a number of stages in Dead or Alive VI have them, three examples being the Desolate Cathedral, Torre de la Niebla and Shinsekai Area stages.
New to the Dead or Alive series and debuting in VI is the Power Strike, a super special move attack that replaces the Power Blow mechanic from Dead or Alive 5.
The camera view/picture take mechanism also returns and has been upgraded a lot better compared to the previous mechanic version in Dead or Alive 5. You are able to use the mechanic in the video game's Gallery Mode, most especially the Movie Theater which lets you watch replays of any battle you've saved. The pictures you take can be view in the Album Mode.
Plot
A year after the events of Dead or Alive 5, Hayate and Ayane along with Mugen Tenshin clan are making preparations to launch an attack on MIST and bring the man known as Victor Donovan to justice. However, as they prepare for the battle, the ninja clan are suddenly ambushed in a surprise attack by MIST soldiers along with a few Kasumi clones, with one of them different from the others appearing to lead the attack. Thanks to the ambush, everybody in the Mugen Tenshin village is wiped out by the onslaught save for Ayane, who manages to hold her own against the few Kasumi clones attacking her, however the Kasumi clone leader proves to be too strong and a defeated Ayane is forced to leave the village to warn Ryu Hayabusa and Kasumi of MIST's attack. After the ambush, a helicopter shows up, which reveals to belong to MIST and stepping out of it and inspecting the destruction is the head of DOATEC’s East Asia branch and mother of Kokoro, Miyako. Miyako brings out her cellphone and confirms to the receiver on the other line of the village’s destruction. The receiver, who is none other than Victor Donovan, commends the operation’s success and orders Miyako and the others soldiers to continue with the next objective.

Characters

In Dead or Alive VI, there are 30 playable characters to choose from to fight against the CPU or another player. The playable roster features 20 returning characters (from Dead or Alive 5: Last Round), 6 new characters making their fighting game debut and 4 characters making their guest debut from the Tekken series. There is also the final boss, though that character remains unplayable.

KASUMI Nationality: Fighting Style: Mugen Tenshin Ninjitsu Tenjinmon Style Special Tag Partner(s): Ayane & Ryu Hayabusa As she continued for her search for the villainous Victor Donovan, Kasumi crosses paths with Ryu Hayabusa, who gravely informs her that MIST have unexpectedly attacked and wiped out the entire Mugen Tenshin clan, and that her brother Hayate has gone missing. Seething with rage, Kasumi along with Ayane (the only other noted survivor) head to where the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament is about to begin. Kasumi signs herself up for the tournament knowing that Victor Donovan will eventually show himself in person when the tournament comes to a close. |

RYU HAYABUSA Nationality: Fighting Style: Hayabusa Ninjitsu Special Tag Partner(s): Kasumi, Ayane, Momiji & Yoshimitsu While he was helping the Mugen Tenshin clan in finding Victor Donovan and administer justice upon him, Ryu receives news from Ayane that the entire Mugen Tenshin clan has been wiped out in a surprise attack by MIST, and that Hayate has gone missing. Ryu informs Kasumi of the news which enrages her and sets off to find where MIST and Victor Donovan are hiding. While he was preparing to help avenge the fallen clan, Ryu suddenly receives a message given to him by an unknown sender: "Project Epsilon was not what you think it was. If you want to know the truth about your friend Hayate, come and find me at the Dead or Alive Tournament.". Wanting to know who sent him the message and what it meant, Ryu heads off to where the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament is about to begin. |

AYANE Nationality: Fighting Style: Mugen Tenshin Ninjitsu Hajinmon Style Special Tag Partner(s): Kasumi, Ryu Hayabusa, Hitomi & Eliot The current leader of the Hajinmon sect of the Mugen Tenshin ninja clan. She was helping the clan making preparations to attack MIST and slay Victor Donovan. However, MIST made the first move and attacked the Mugen Tenshin village unprepared, killing everyone except for Ayane herself, though Hayate's body wasn't among the dead. Afterwards, Ayane went to Ryu Hayabusa and Kasumi about the grave situation, Ayane is determined to find out the truth and bring wrathful judgement towards the current objects of her anger. |

MOMIJI Nationality: Fighting Style: Hayabusa Aikijutsu Special Tag Partner(s): Ryu Hayabusa A member of the Hayabusa ninja clan serving as a Dragon Shrine Maiden, Momiji is also an apprentice of Ryu Hayabusa. After the massacre of the Mugen Tenshin clan by MIST soldiers, Ryu Hayabusa asks Momiji to help him along with Kasumi and Ayane (the only survivors of the Mugen Tenshin left) in seeking out Victor Donovan and bring him to justice at the hands of the ninjas. Momiji accepts her master's request and aids Ryu and the others to uncover the secrets that lie behind the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament. |

TINA ARMSTRONG Nationality: Fighting Style: Pro Wrestling Special Tag Partner(s): Zack, Mila & King The daughter of the famous pro wrestler Bass Armstrong who yearns to achieve her dreams. She was pursuing her new goal of becoming a state governor when she hears that her father Bass had been brutally injured in a fight. Distraught and angry at her father's terrible condition, Tina learns that the man responsible is entering the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament. Tina Armstrong forsakes her dreams and enters her name in the tournament in order to take revenge on the man who mutilated her father Bass. |

LEIFANG Nationality: Fighting Style: Tai Chi Special Tag Partner(s): Hitomi, Jann Lee, Carlita & Joachim A practitioner of Tai Chi Quan who is beginning to develop romantic feelings for Jann Lee. One day, she came across a female Colombian fighter named Carlita and the two battled. Leifang's skills as a fighter and Carlita display of dancing prowess made their fight intense yet neither could gain the upper hand over the other. Impressed, Leifang told Carlita that if they should have a rematch, it will be in the next Dead or Alive Tournament. When the sixth tournament is announced to the world, Leifang smiles, knowing she will see Jann Lee and Hitomi there, as well as having her second match with Carlita. |

HITOMI Nationality: Fighting Style: Karate Special Tag Partner(s): Leifang, Joachim, Ayane & Asuka Kazama Hitomi ended up being the runner-up of the Fifth Dead or Alive Tournament, losing only to Jann Lee. Despite this though, Hitomi feels that she is still lacking in her skills as a fighter, not to mention coping with the fact that Ein is now the ninja Hayate. Hitomi decided to retrain herself as a better Karate practitioner along with her father, who was more than happy to help his daughter out. With the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament announced, Mila signs her name up hoping to do better than in the previous tournament and face the likes of Tina and Hitomi once again. |

MARIE ROSE Nationality: Fighting Style: Systema Special Tag Partner(s): Kokoro, Honoka & Bayman A petite female fighter with a love for the supernatural and gothic lolita fashion, Marie Rose is a very loyal and faithful servant of Helena Douglas, the CEO of DOATEC, whom she is eager to please whenever she performs any tasks given to her. While she may not appear to look it, Marie Rose is a fighter possessesing one of the most deadliest martial arts styles ever known in Europe and uses her size to her advantage when she battles. Helena tasks Marie Rose to protect Kokoro from anyone she deems a threat, even if it is Helena herself. Confused by what she meant by that but accepting her master's task nevertheless, Marie Rose dedicates herself in fulfilling her new objective. |

To Jann Lee, he felt that he was no match for Rig with the strength he had, so Jann Lee trained as hard as he's ever gone before. Finally ready and hearing the announcement of the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament, Jann Lee enters the competition, determined to defeat Rig in the rematch he has prepared himself for. |

ZACK Nationality: Fighting Style: Muay Thai Special Tag Partner(s): Tina, Mila, Carlita & King An optimistic and natural showman who helped in hosting the previous Dead or Alive Tournament as the host of the competition. After the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament is announced to the world by Helena Douglas, Zack will also assume the role as the host once again. He currently scouted around the world looking for anyone who would be willing to compete in the tournament, one person he came across was an old acquaintance of his, a female dancing fighter from Colombia named Carlita. As the sixth tournament is about to commence, Zack prepares himself to give the audience a show they'll never forget. |

BAYMAN Nationality: Fighting Style: Sambo Special Tag Partner(s): Marie Rose & Yoshimitsu A former professional assassin turned mercenary, Bayman continues to hunt down the leader of MIST Victor Donovan ever since Donovan tried to kill him. Some months before the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament is announced, Bayman was contacted by Helena Douglas, the CEO of DOATEC, for another hired mission: Eliminate the MIST members Rig and Christie during the events of the tournament. Bayman of course accepts the job, since completing it will mean getting closer to the man whose blood the mercenary truly wants. |

ELIOT Nationality: Fighting Style: Xing Yi Quan Special Tag Partner(s): Zhang Tai & Ayane A student of Gen Fu who is training to become the successor of the Xinyi Liuhe Quan fighting style his master practices. Some time ago, Eliot challenged the assassin Zhang Tai to a battle, only to be completely overwhelmed by the assassin's skills. Taking the loss hard, Eliot decided to push himself further in hopes for a rematch against Zhang Tai. When the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament is announced, Eliot enters the competition and sees that Zhang Tai himself is participating. Eliot hopes that the two of them will face each other, only this time victory will be his. |

RIG Nationality: Fighting Style: Taekwondo Special Tag Partner(s): Christie, Victor Donovan & Jann Lee Real name unknown (for now), what is known is that Rig is the son of Victor Donovan, the leader of MIST. Rig was working at an oil rig offshore (which served as the unusual venue for the Fifth Dead or Alive Tournament) under the guise of a man with amnesia. But Rig's true purpose there was to overlook the beginning of the Phase 4 experiment of Project Alpha. With the final stages of Project Alpha almost complete, Victor Donovan asks his son to compete in the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament, to keep Psycho Butch in check and to weaken any competitors deemed a threat to MIST's plans. |

NYOTENGU Nationality: Fighting Style: Tengu-Do Special Tag Partner(s): Kaiden A female Tengu who is the sister of the late Gohyakumine Bankotsubo, Nyotengu is a voluptuous beauty and powerful fighter who yearns to fight a very strong opponent, she believes that she is superior to all humans. Victor Donovan retrieved Raidou's corpse and revived him as a cyborg. Despite losing most of his memory, Raidou still retains that lust for power and destruction, relishing in his megalomanic tendencies. Despite this though, he is willing to serve under Donovan as repayment for being revived. When Helena Douglas, leader of DOATEC, announces the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament, Donovan orders Raidou with a specific mission: Observe the newcomer to the tournament named Kaiden. |

ZHANG TAI Nationality: Fighting Style: Zhang Jia Zhi Ming Yi (Incorporated Chang Quan & Wu Xing) Special Tag Partner(s): Kaiden, Eliot & Kokoro The son of the deadly martial arts assassin Zhang Shao, Zhang Tai also happens to be the latest descendant of the famous Three Kingdoms warrior Zhang Liao. He is a good friend of Kaiden's and an unknown rival of Eliot's. Zhang Tai's prowess as an assassin and fighter is impressive, displaying his skills with a clear conscience despite his professional preference of work. On one assassination assignment, Zhang Tai stumbles upon a plan by MIST to kidnap his friend Kaiden. He reaches Kaiden before MIST could get their hands on him and afterwards informs Kaiden that his would-be abductors are deeply involved in the Dead or Alive Tournaments. When the sixth tournament is announced, Zhang Tai enters along with Kaiden to find out what MIST are truly planning. |

Carlita has travelled the world, looking for new opponents to fight displaying her unique martial art. During her travel, she came across the Tai Chi practitioner Leifang and the two duked it out with neither gaining the upper hand, but for Carlita, this was one the most excited battles she's ever had in a long time. When the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament is announced, Carlita approached Zack to sign up for tournament which he happily obliged, Carlita hopes to show her worth as a fighter and fight Leifang in their second battle. |

Joachim is the one who taught everything there is to know about Karate to Hitomi and also made her into a strong willed fighter like he is. A year after his daughter became the runner-up of the Fifth Dead or Alive Tournament, Joachim has been helping Hitomi out in retraining her fighting style in order to be a better martial artist. When the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament is announced to the world, Hitomi tells her father that they should both compete to show their worth and promote the family dojo, Joachim agrees, admitting that he wishes to test himself fully against other opponents. The large, very obese giant known as Psycho Butch is a twisted criminal who relishes in torturing and brutalising his victims. He was recently thrown in prison for extreme assault and G.B.H. until the cyborg ninja Raidou broke him out. Raidou's superior, Victor Donovan, wishes for Psycho Butch to work for him, in exchange, Psycho Butch can enter the Sixth Dead or Alive Tournament (under a false alias no less). The leader of the Manji Clan, a group of ninjas who perform Robin Hood-esque deeds by robbing the rich and give money to the poor and innocent. Whilst pursuing the crazed cyborg Bryan Fury, Yoshimitsu's old sword started to become more corrupt and evil, so he decided to use the sword Fumaken whilst searching for a way to cleanse his old sword from its own darkness. He knows of the Hayabusa and Mugen Tenshin Clan of ninjas, the latter his own clan has feuded before. |

- The song "Open Your Eyes" by American heavy metal band Disturbed was chosen as the opening theme for Dead or Alive VI.
- The name of the new character Kaiden is pronounced "Kay-dahn" and is an Irish name meaning "Warrior". Originally, he was going to be an Austrian or German character called Wilhelm until it changed to Goddard. Team Ninja decided to change Kaiden's nationality and name to Irish and give him the name he has now.
- Zhang Tai was originally named Zhang Tong during development, the name was changed later.
- While they debuted as playable characters in later Dead or Alive 5 updates, Dead or Alive VI will be the first game that Nyotengu, Marie Rose and Honoka debut in regards to the story behind Dead or Alive series.
- Recurring Dead or Alive character Christie was originally not going to be included into Dead or Alive VI video game, but ended up being added for plot reasons.
- Brad Wong was originally going to be in the game instead of Miyako. However, Team Ninja felt that Brad Wong didn't have much of a bigger role anymore compared to Kokoro's mother, whom the creator of the Dead or Alive series Tomonobu Itagaki had originally intended before he left Team Ninja.
- The Shadowspring stage is an unlockable bonus stage that is originally from Koei Tecmo's Zero: Nuregarasu no Miko (Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water in US/Canada and Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water in PAL regions).
- The story of Dead or Alive VI confirms that Lisa Hamilton (also known as the luchadora La Mariposa) is in fact deceased and did die from the explosion in MIST's offshore rig laboratory during the events of Dead or Alive 5.
